As it turns out, two items in today’s Times feel like they could be ripped from the pages of Rankine’s book. First, the Yale graduate student, a woman of color, who was napping in a common area of a dorm when another student (white) called the police on her, assuming she had broken in.

And here’s a story about African American students at the U of FL, who were forcibly moved off the stage by the white faculty member tasked with ushering students on and off stage to get their diplomas. Their infraction? Dancing for a beat too long to celebrate the moment. Close resemblance to Serena’s “crip-walk” as analyzed by Rankine.
